My name is Julie Kaplan, and I am a recent graduate of Arizona State University.

I live in San Francisco, California where I work as an Associate Consultant at Bain & Company.

I graduated this past spring from Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University with a B.S. in Finance, and a B.A. in Business Global Politics.

I spent the fall 2022 semester studying at the University of Prince Edward Island as a Fulbright Canada Killam Fellow.

I took two years off from Arizona State University (fall 2020 to spring 2022), to gain a myriad of experiences both in the United States and abroad.

I completed an internship during the summer of 2022 in Houston as an Oil and Gas Investment Banking Summer Analyst.

Before that, I spent 4 months the prior winter and spring filming a 12-episode docu-series detailing my solo travels through Iraq. You can watch these episodes on my YouTube channel “Julie from LA.”

I spent the spring of 2021 living in Chisinau, Moldova where I interned at a small bank that specialized in microlending, and in-tandem volunteered at the American Chamber of Commerce.

In the fall of 2020, I worked at Deloitte in Zurich, Switzerland as a trainee in Financial Advisory. I have previously interned at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in Prime Brokerage Sales and Trading (summer 2020), and Wells Fargo Securities within Healthcare Investment Banking (summer 2019.) These were both located in New York City.

I am proud of my time working at Arizona Microcredit Initiative, a 501(c)3 nonprofit based in Phoenix, Arizona dedicated to empowering small business owners through education, one-on-one consulting, and small-business loans. I served as a director of this nonprofit for two years.

As a Polish-US dual citizen, I have grown up with a deep understanding of the nuances that come with bridging two cultures. My family runs a small business called PolandPassport.com with an office in Warsaw, and I have competed for and captained Team Poland in international sporting events. I am drawn to European politics and culture and hope to spend more time on that side of the pond in the coming years.

297 Travels in Iraq

Published on July 8, 2023

City names like Mosul, Karbala and Basra - and of course the capital Baghdad - are familiar to us all, but not from seeing people's holiday snaps, unfortunately. Tourism in Iraq is a very small-scale affair, but I've been curious about it recently after seeing a couple of people I knew travel there - and I've interviewed two women who've recently travelled to Iraq for this episode.

First up, I speak with Julie Kaplan. Curiously, Julie intended only to spend a few days in Kurdistan and on the insistent advice of friends she made there, decided to explore federal Iraq as well - and ending up spending four months there!

Julie spent the summer as an intern within Healthcare Equity Capital Markets (ECM) at Wells Fargo Securities. I was her Director on the team. Julie performed at an exceptionally high level. Within ECM we originate and execute equity offerings (IPOs and follow-on offerings) for corporate clients. This past summer was very active within the healthcare equity new issue market and Julie gained a tremendous amount of experience; she played a pivotal role in executing nine equity transactions for our team. Additionally, this summer Julie's responsibilities included creating pitch book materials, analyzing shareholder data, and drafting commitment committee memos for our transactions. Julie proved herself to be a very hard worker who grasped some of the more complex concepts within ECM quickly. Beyond Julie's technical skills and industry knowledge, she always exhibited an incredibly positive attitude - constantly upbeat and excited to be doing work. Julie was a true pleasure to have on our team, a consummate professional, and a very talented asset for us.

During her time as my W. P. Carey Success in Business instructor, Julie Kaplan has shown herself to be an incredible leader and an even greater role model. Showing immense dedication and genuine mastery, Julie demonstrated exactly what it meant to be a business professional by using her experiences as examples. Julie’s invaluable presentation skills and outstanding sense of direction helped us as students hone essential abilities such as resume building, networking, internship exploration, interview professionalism and leadership management. Not only this, Julie adeptly facilitated learning by truly establishing a great sense of communication, awareness, understanding and reasoning within peer-to-peer discussions. Julie’s comprehensive introduction to the world of business simply could not have been better, and I am grateful for having Julie Kaplan as my instructor as I am more knowledgeable about the intricacies held within the realm of business.

During my time at Arizona Microcredit Initiative, I have had the opportunity to work with Julie in multiple capacities. I have seen her take on challenges to grow and enjoy the process. She has learned how to operate in ambiguity, especially in working with others to create functional and effective new processes and structures. After I saw Julie develop during my tenure as Director of Finance, I was excited to see how she would take on the role of Director of Workshops - she hit the ground running and she has no intentions of stopping. Julie will be a valuable addition to any team seeking to enact effective change.
